NCMIR Featured in Bio-IT World

Image of BioWall

December 2004—
NCMIR’s “BioWall,” a newly designed 20-tile wall of high-resolution flat-panel displays that project massive, detailed 2D and 3D images of the brain, was featured in Bio-IT World this month.

The BioWall's technology was cited as an example of a new trend in biomedical research in which workstations based on commodity processors and widely used operating systems replace the traditional machines built on proprietary technology. Opteron-based Sun Java™ Microsystems workstations power the BioWall, which projects images allowing scientists to explore relationships among subcellular components, cells, and cellular networks at unprecedented resolution.

NCMIR’s David Lee was quoted in the article, stating Sun Java™ Microsystems technologies power the BioWall “because of their performance, ability to handle large amounts of memory per node, stability, and compatibility with QuadroFX graphics.”
