NEU260/CHEM208: Workshop in Light and Electron Microscopy

This 4-unit graduate course will review basic principles of light and electron microscopy and introduce a variety of advanced microscopy research methods. This will be accomplished through 2 hours of formal lecture per week and 6 hours of hands-on training on specimen preparation, instrumentation, and image analysis. Laboratory periods will include a 3-hour formal training period and 3 hours of independent study to gain additional experience. Each student will bring their own project based on their intended thesis work that will benefit from the application of the techniques presented in the course. Practical examinations will be administered to cover topics presented in lab. Students in the laboratory course will provide a formal presentation of their results at the end of the quarter. This course is offered through the HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces program (http://interfaces.ucsd.edu/program.cfm). You must be enrolled in this program to take this course.
NEU259: Introduction to Light and Electron Microscopy

This 4-unit graduate course designed to be an introduction to microscopy will review basic principles of light and electron microscopy and introduce a variety of advanced microscopy research methods. This will be accomplished through 2 hours of formal lecture and 1.5-hour demonstrations each week. Examinations will be administered to cover topics presented in lecture. A brief oral presentation will also be required. Prerequisite: permission of the instructors. Sat/Unsat grades.
NEU257: Mammalian Neuroanatomy

This introductory course
in mammalian neuroanatomy is geared towards students with a limited
neuroanatomy background. Lectures provide a review of major systems
and structures in the brain, with an emphasis on human anatomy and
a reference to mouse systems. The lecture meets once per week. The
course is offered annually in the fall quarter.
